Kupang, NTT (ANTARA) – A 7.5 magnitude earthquake which struck in the Flores Sea, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Province, has the potential to trigger a tsunami, according to officials.

“The earthquake occurred at 10.20 Western Indonesia Standard Time (WIB) about 112 kilometers (km) to the northwest of Larantuka Sub-district, NTT Province, at a depth of 12 km,” Head of the Kupang City Geophysics Station Margiono announced here on Tuesday.

The earthquake was felt by the residents on Flores Island and surrounding islands.

The station head said that the earthquake had the potential to trigger tsunamis in NTT, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), Maluku, South Sulawesi and Southeast Sulawesi provinces.

He urged residents in potentially affected areas to remain vigilant and seek shelter in safer places to avoid a possible tsunami.

In addition, he asked the regional governments to immediately order all residents to evacuate.
