Flood swamps Sumber Sari, E Kalimantan, and displaces 43 people

Babulu, East Kalimantan (ANTARA) – A flood swamped Sumber Sari Village, Babulu Sub-district, North Penajam Paser District, East Kalimantan Province, and displaced 43 people.

“Yesterday, inhabitants of three RTs (nighborhood units) rushed to the Sumber Sari Village’s hall to take refuge, and now the number of refugees increases as several inhabitants from five RTs take refuge,” Nurlaila, the head of the Emergency and Logistics of the Regional Disaster Mitigation Office (BPBD) of North Penajam Paser, said in Penajam, Sunday.

The flooding submerged 54 houses inhabited by 272 people.

However, not all residents whose houses were inundated, were willing to evacuate themselves to locations prepared by the local authorities, she said.

The disaster mitigation office continued to monitor the flood waters which reached a height of between 20 cm and 120 cm, she added.

Sumber Sari and Gunung Mulia, two villages located in North Penajam Paser, have been flooded since Oct 7, 2021.

The flooding triggered by incessant rains which caused several rivers to spill over their banks and damaged a bridge.
