Governor to review activity of Baribis Fault in southern Jakarta

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan confirmed here on Saturday that his side will review the activeness of the Baribis Fault located in southern Jakarta.

It was conveyed as a response to the statement of the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued on Friday (June 24, 2022).

Earlier, the agency remarked that the fault was proven active and estimated to have moved around five millimeters per year.

“The activeness of the fault is also recorded by BMKG’s seismograph sensor, as a number of earthquakes of small magnitude of 2.3 to 3.1 have been observed along the fault line,” Coordinator for Earthquake and Tsunami Mitigation at BMKG, Daryono, noted in a statement here on Friday.

The BMKG lauded the study of the Baribis Fault that was published in the Scientific Reports (Nature) journal in 2022 since the research had completed the map on earthquake sources in Indonesia.

Daryono stated that the Baribis fault line is estimated to have a length of about 100 kilometers (km) that stretches along several big cities, such as Bogor, Bekasi, and Jakarta.

The fault line stretches along the southern region of Jakarta — creating the Jakarta segment — toward the east — creating the Bekasi-Purwakarta segment. Thus, the southern area of Jakarta is prone to earthquakes.

“According to BMKG’s data, the southern segment of Jakarta has not shown any earthquake activity. However, the results of the study show a high level of compression, which is assessed to be related to a locked area. It should be a matter of concern,” Daryono stated.

Hence, he emphasized that all people should understand the skills of surviving an earthquake, for which massive education and evacuation drills must be conducted continuously.

“It is important to implement concrete mitigation attempts in Jakarta, Bogor, Tangerang, Bekasi, Karawang, Purwakarta, and their surrounding areas by creating earthquake-resistant buildings and establishing earthquake risk-based spatial planning that refers to a detailed earthquake hazard microzonation map,” he added.
