Sigi, Central Sulawesi (ANTARA) – Social Affairs Minister Tri Rismaharini visited and witnessed first-hand the condition of residents affected by flooding in North Pakuli Village, Sigi District, Central Sulawesi, who are evacuated to the courtyard of Al-Anshar Mosque, Pakuli Village.

“I ask the evacuation site to remain (functional) here until the end of December 2022 in line with the potential for heavy rains in parts of Indonesia, including Central Sulawesi,” the minister noted here on Wednesday.

At least 182 families, or 662 people, were affected by the flooding caused by the overflowing of Gumbasa River in Pakuli Village, Gumbasa Sub-district, Sigi District, Central Sulawesi. The overflowing of the river was caused by heavy rains that lashed from Monday afternoon (September 5) to Tuesday morning (September 6).

A total of 662 people began to evacuate on Tuesday to the evacuation site located in the courtyard of Al-Anshar Mosque.

During her visit to the evacuation site, Rismaharini checked the condition of the communal kitchens, evacuation tents, and logistics tents. She also spoke with the evacuees and distributed logistical assistance at the evacuation site, including for babies and children.

On the occasion, the minister urged Regional Secretary of Central Sulawesi Province, Rudy Dewanto, and District Head of Sigi, Mohamad Irwan, to temporarily designate the location as a gathering and evacuation point, as heavy rains are projected to still occur and the peak will also occur during the November – December 2022 period based on information from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

“When it rains, they have to stay at this location until February 2023 to be completely safe from the threat of flood,” she remarked.

She stressed that the Ministry of Social Affairs will provide logistical support for the evacuees as long as they are at the evacuation site until that time.

“Tents and logistical support have been prepared for the residents. Hence, if it rains, the residents must come here immediately,” she remarked.
