Indonesia is determined to support universal and useful connectivity

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia remains steadfast in its fight for universal and useful connectivity for all citizens of the member countries of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

“Indonesia is determined to support universal and useful connectivity,” Minister of Communications and Informatics Johnny G. Plate stated at the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference 2022 (PP 22), Bucharest, Romania, as quoted in the ministry’s press release Wednesday.

Universal and useful connectivity is important in the midst of a dynamic world that is facing a new future for recovery after the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Today, we are working towards that goal because it contributes to the achievement of the ITU Strategic Goals and the Connect 2030 Agenda,” Plate stated.

This is the right time to reduce the digital divide in the world because the surge in internet use continues to occur, according to the minister.

The minister also affirmed that the development of information and communication technology infrastructure in Indonesia aims to reduce the digital divide.

Indonesia is currently deploying 460 thousand kilometers of fiber optic cable on land and undersea to link unconnected points.

Indonesia is also completing around 65 percent of the target for the construction of 4G Base Transceiver Station (BTS) towers to meet the needs of thousands of villages in non-commercial areas or frontier, outermost and disadvantaged (3T) areas.

“In the second quarter of 2023 next year, we will launch two units of High Throughput Geo Earth Orbit Satellite, with a capacity of 150 Gbps, to support internet access in more than 150 thousand public facilities in the 3T area,” Plate remarked.

With the large-scale development of ICT infrastructure, the minister is optimistic that Indonesia would be able to contribute to facilitating access for 2.7 billion people not yet connected to the internet.

The PP-22 Conference is ITU’s highest decision-making body. The high-level meeting was attended by 193 member countries that would agree on ITU’s strategic and financial plans, leadership, and directions for the next four years.
