In the future, we will also build the facility in other regions

Denpasar, Bali (ANTARA) – Home Affairs Minister Tito Karnavian has called for the construction of the Kertalangu Integrated Waste Management Facility (TPST) in Denpasar city, Bali province, to be completed in October before the implementation of the G20 Summit.

The Kertalangu TPST is expected to become operational by November 2022 and be showcased to the delegates attending the summit, he said here on Thursday.

Further, excellent waste management would have an impact on climate change mitigation attempts, he added.

“There have been abrasions on the east and north coast (of Bali Island) and many villages have been sunk (by seawater), thus climate change is truly happening. One of the factors which is accelerating climate change is the waste problem,” he noted.

Moreover, if waste is not managed properly and allowed to pollute the sea, it will damage the marine ecosystem, the minister added.

Hence, he said he will ask other regions in Indonesia to also establish their own TPST.

“In the future, we will also build the facility in other regions–it is the reason we have involved the Home Affairs Ministry. I, as the Home Affairs Minister, will encourage regional governments to also implement this (TPST project in their respective regions) later,” he added.

Meanwhile, head of the Denpasar City Environment Office, Ida Bagus Putra Wirabawa, said that Kertalangu TPST is one of the three TPSTs built in the city. The other two facilities are Tahura TPST and Padangsambian Kaja TPST.

It is estimated that Kertalangu TPST, which is being built on approximately a two-hectare area, will be able to accommodate 450 tons of waste, while the Padangsambian Kaja TPST and the Tahura TPST will be able to manage 120 tons and 450 tons of waste, respectively.

“With the establishment and operation of the TPSTs, it is expected that the waste problem in Denpasar city will be handled,” the office head stated.

Currently, his party has begun to prepare the machines that will be used at the Kertalangu TPST, he added.

In addition, there are 21 Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle Waste Management Facilities (TPS-3R) for supporting waste management in the city, so the waste will not get accumulated in the TPSTs.
