Beijing (ANTARA) – China’s People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLA) and Indonesia’s military plan to hold a joint navigation exercise in waters east of the island of Taiwan, China’s Defense Ministry said, as naval cooperation between the countries expands.
“In mid-August, the Chinese Navy’s Honghe will conduct a navigation exercise with an Indonesian Navy frigate in waters east of the island of Taiwan,” the ministry said.
According to a statement from the ministry’s official website that ANTARA quoted in Beijing on Wednesday, the exercise will include communications drills and at-sea replenishment.
The drills aims to improve joint naval operations, deepen practical cooperation and jointly safeguard regional peace and stability, the ministry said.
The exercise comes shortly after PLA Navy Task Group 83 made a goodwill visit to Surabaya, East Java, from Aug. 2-6, 2026.
During the Indonesia visit, Task Group 83 paid courtesy calls on Indonesian military and government leaders. PLA cadets and personnel also visited the Indonesian Naval Academy for sports and cultural activities.
While the PLA Navy ships were docked at Tanjung Perak Port, Indonesian citizens, Chinese nationals in Indonesia and Indonesian military representatives were allowed aboard the Qijiguang training ship.
Chinese naval cadets also visited the KRI Bima Suci training ship, which has made three visits to China, in 2019, 2024 and May 2026.
