BRIN taps sports science and AI to enhance athlete performance

Jakarta (ANTARA) – The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) is supporting the integration of sports science into national sports development, including the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology to optimize athletes’ strategies and performance.

BRIN Deputy for Science and Technology Human Resources Edy Giri Rachman Putra noted that advances in science and technology can strengthen critical aspects that athletes rely on to achieve world-class performance.

“It’s not just talent that needs nurturing, but also the support system. That includes sports nutrition, including supplements and diet,” Edy said during the Road to Talent Fest 2026 event in Jakarta on Thursday.

Beyond nutrition, he added, technological applications can support the development of sports equipment and the formulation of strategies for training and competition.

Edy highlighted BRIN’s readiness to support national talent development as science and technology become increasingly integrated across various fields, including sports.

The effort is also aligned with the Ministry of Youth and Sports’ initiative to integrate sports science into athlete development, from the youth level to the elite ranks.

The ministry’s Deputy for Sports Performance Enhancement Surono stated that his office is currently partnering with universities to advance sports science and is open to collaborating with BRIN.

The Ministry of Youth and Sports is also aligning the National Talent Management (MTN) program with the National Sports Grand Design (DBON) across several key areas, including athlete development, competition, capacity building, infrastructure, and data management.

Meanwhile, Pungkas Bahjuri Ali, Deputy for Human and Cultural Development at the Ministry of National Development Planning, noted that MTN is designed to prepare top-tier talent capable of excelling at both the national and international levels.

The initiative encompasses sports, arts and culture, as well as research and innovation, serving as a core pillar of the Golden Indonesia 2045 vision.
