Indonesia’s position on Palestine has never wavered: MPR

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Speaker of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR RI) Ahmad Muzani emphasized that Indonesia’s position on the Palestinian issue has never changed or wavered.

He stated that supporting the Palestinian cause does not constitute hostility toward any religion or nation.

“Support for Palestinian independence is rooted in the nation’s history of struggle and its Constitution,” Muzani said in Jakarta on Friday.

He made the statement during the opening of the 2026 Annual Session of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR RI) and the Joint Session of the House of Representatives (DPR RI) and the Regional Representatives Council (DPD RI).

Muzani noted that the Indonesian people have personally experienced the suffering of prolonged colonial rule and, therefore, cannot remain silent while another nation lives under occupation and violence.

Consequently, he said, Indonesia supports the right of the Palestinian people to be independent, sovereign, and able to live with dignity in their own homeland.

“The people and nation of Indonesia will continue to stand with the Palestinian people,” he declared.

Muzani explained that sovereignty means a nation’s ability to determine its own path, safeguard its territory, protect its people, manage its natural resources, and formulate positions based on national interests and its fundamental principles.

The Indonesian Constitution, he noted, provides a clear directive that Indonesia is obligated to participate in maintaining a world order based on independence, lasting peace, and social justice.

To that end, he continued, an “independent and active” foreign policy means having the freedom to determine Indonesia’s position based on its national interests, without aligning with any particular bloc.

“Indonesia must remain consistent in rejecting war as a means of resolving disputes between nations,” Muzani stated.

On Friday, the MPR RI, DPR RI, and DPD RI held the MPR RI Annual Session and the Joint Session of the DPR RI and DPD RI.

The annual sessions are state events marking the 81st anniversary of Indonesia’s independence and were held under the theme “A Sovereign, Just, and Prosperous Indonesia.”
