Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia’s disaster agency confirmed two deaths after a magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck Nagekeo District in East Nusa Tenggara Province on Saturday, with tsunami warnings later lifted.
Acting Head of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency’s (BMKG’s) Data, Information and Communications Center Berton SP Panjaitan said the deaths occurred at El Say Port in neighboring Sikka District.
“Based on preliminary reports, two people — a man and a woman — died, while another person was injured,” Panjaitan said.
The shallow earthquake struck 15 km deep, centered offshore about 38 km northeast of Mbay, Nagekeo, at 5:58 a.m. Central Indonesia Time, or WITA.
Strong shaking lasting about one minute was felt across Nagekeo, Sikka and West Manggarai Districts in East Nusa Tenggara.
The earthquake was also felt in Bima, West Nusa Tenggara, and parts of South Sulawesi, including Jeneponto, the Selayar Islands and Maros.
Following a tsunami warning from the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), joint rescue teams evacuated coastal residents and provided medical treatment to victims.
Panjaitan said several aftershocks followed, including two magnitude 6.2 tremors recorded at 6:13 a.m. and 6:28 a.m. WITA.
The earthquake initially prompted tsunami warnings for coastal areas of East Nusa Tenggara, West Nusa Tenggara and South Sulawesi. BMKG lifted the warnings at 8:30 a.m. WITA.
Despite the warnings being lifted, BNPB urged people, particularly coastal residents, to remain calm, avoid cracked or damaged buildings and follow instructions from emergency personnel.
