Semarang (ANTARA) – A joint search and rescue team recovered the body of a 16-year-old Indonesian hiker on Wednesday after he fell into the crater of Mount Slamet in Central Java while taking a selfie.
Budiono, head of the Semarang Search and Rescue (SAR) Office, said rescuers retrieved the body of M. Fahri Maulana, a teenager from Brebes Regency, in an overnight operation that concluded early Wednesday morning.
The fatal incident occurred Tuesday morning while Maulana was taking photos on the crater rim.
He had scaled Central Java’s highest peak on Monday with two companions.
Rescuers launched the recovery mission Tuesday evening, taking about an hour to extract Maulana’s body from the floor of the crater before carrying him down the mountain over challenging terrain.
“The victim’s body was brought down via the Permadi base camp in Guci, Tegal Regency,” Budiono said.
The rescue team reached the base camp at approximately 2:15 a.m. local time (WIB) on Wednesday under clear weather conditions.
Maulana’s body was subsequently transferred to the Bumijawa Community Health Center for medical examination before being released to his family.
