Wamena, Papua Highlands (ANTARA) – The Papua Special Autonomy Development Acceleration Steering Agency (BP3OKP) is strengthening oversight of special autonomy funds across eight districts to ensure spending complies with regulations, an official said.
Speaking in Wamena on Wednesday, BP3OKP Highlands member Gaad P. Tabuni said the agency, operating under Indonesia’s vice president, works with provincial and district governments to monitor special autonomy fund allocations.
“We have so far conducted outreach and coordination on special autonomy fund oversight in two districts, Lanny Jaya and Jayawijaya. The other six await further activities,” he said.
As a vice-presidential agency, BP3OKP is tasked with monitoring and guiding regional programs and activities financed by special autonomy funds to ensure compliance with regulations, he said.
“Our role is to remind, monitor, and guide regional programs so they stay within the rules. Officials should not deviate because they could face legal action,” he said.
Special autonomy funds are legally earmarked for education, health, infrastructure, and economic empowerment of Indigenous Papuans, he said.
“The funds are strictly regulated, with several ministries using new applications to manage them. Regional agencies must use them properly to avoid criminal charges,” he said.
He said coordination among governments in the eight districts is needed to prevent misuse of special autonomy funds from the outset.
“Coordination ensures medium- and long-term development plans comply with the law, allowing programs to be properly implemented and benefits to reach communities,” he said.
