VP visits mothers, newborns at quake-hit NTT hospital

Sikka, NTT (ANTARA) – Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka has visited TC Hillers Regional General Hospital in Maumere, Sikka District, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) to inspect and meet with several mothers who had recently given birth and were being treated in an emergency ward following an earthquake, to ensure that residents’ needs were being met.

During his inspection at the hospital’s emergency treatment tents on Thursday, Gibran visited the emergency treatment area set up in the hospital yard and spoke with a mother who had recently given birth to a baby girl following the earthquake on Saturday (Aug 15).

Gibran said the government and hospital management will improve healthcare services so that the patients will get better treatment rooms.

The VP told the victims whose house is damage will get assistance from the government.

The VP also inspected other hospital facilities, including the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for newborns requiring intensive care, and paid attention to several babies treated outside the main building.

Gibran was inspecting the hospital accompanied by several officials, including Sikka District Head Juventus Prima Yoris Kago.

Earlier, Gibran also inspected the Wairklau Elementary School building to meet the evacuees and viewed the condition of Laurentius Say Port in Maumere that was damaged due to the earthquake.

Indonesia’s National Agency for Disaster Countermeasure (BNPB) reported that as of Wednesday (Aug 19) at 8 p.m. local time, a total of 71 people had died as a result of the earthquake in NTT.

Additionally, the total number of evacuees across NTT had reached 59,647, with the largest number recorded in Manggarai District.
