Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesian authorities have mobilized 18,504 security personnel to maintain public order while guarding and serving citizens planning to stage mass demonstrations in Jakarta on Thursday.
Central Jakarta Police Chief Senior Commissioner Reynold EP Hutagalung said the force had prepared a layered approach to crowd control to facilitate safe, orderly, and conducive rallies and protests.
“We began rolling out security measures at 7 a.m.,” he noted in a statement in Jakarta, adding that senior and supervising officers would be involved in the operation.
Hutagalung explained that personnel would be stationed across six designated zones, with the Central Jakarta Police assigned to safeguard public safety and order during demonstrations near the Parliament Complex (Zone 1).
He said the other zones encompass the Semanggi flyover, Mulia Hotel, TVRI office, Gerbang Pancasila, Palmerah Station, and the Supreme Audit Board (BPK), among other priority areas.
Personnel have also been deployed around the HI Roundabout and Dukuh Atas to anticipate rallies and their potential impact on traffic flows, he added.
Emphasizing a humane approach, the police chief assured the public that all personnel would be unarmed, carrying neither guns nor blades.
“This policy reflects our commitment to prioritizing a humane and persuasive approach to public service and security measures during protests,” Hutagalung affirmed.
In addition to crowd-control personnel, authorities have deployed teams tasked with ensuring that the planned protests do not cause mobility bottlenecks. Traffic management has been readied in anticipation of blocked roads.
“We are present to provide a sense of safety and comfort for all citizens who will voice their aspirations. In serving the public, we prioritize a humane approach, communication, and persuasion,” the officer concluded.
Plans for large-scale demonstrations on Aug. 27 in Jakarta have drawn public attention in recent days, with social media discussion increasingly focusing on aspirations voiced by residents of Pati District, Central Java.
Members of the so-called United Pati Community Alliance (APMB) have confirmed their intention to join peaceful rallies in Jakarta, demanding the immediate passage of the asset forfeiture bill and the introduction of capital punishment for corruptors.
