Indonesia pushes resilience partnership with Australia on food, energy

“We are trying to focus on several pillars, including maritime, economic, security and food. From the discussions, we agreed to narrow the focus to food and energy security,” Sugiono said.

Sugiono said the initiative stemmed from the Middle East conflict, which has caused problems for countries in the region, including Australia, which has faced difficulties meeting its fertilizer raw material needs.

He said the partnership was intended to specifically address regional issues directly related to the interests of countries in the region.

“This is not a new bloc or a new grouping, but rather an effort to intensify cooperation and focus on resilience issues in this region, particularly food and energy security,” Sugiono said.

He stressed that the partnership would complement existing agreements between Indonesia and Australia.​​​​​​​

Sugiono also said Indonesia had signed a renewed trilateral agreement with Australia and Pacific Island countries to strengthen cooperation in various areas.

“This is a renewal of what was signed in 2021, essentially covering cooperation among these countries in various areas, including disaster management, food security, health, capacity building, economic cooperation and related areas,” he said.

Indonesia and Australia held the 2+2 Foreign and Defense Ministers’ Meeting in Melbourne on Wednesday to discuss implementation of the Jakarta Treaty 2026.

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese signed the Indonesia-Australia Treaty on Common Security, known as the Jakarta Treaty 2026, on Feb. 6, 2026.

The treaty strengthens regular high-level consultations and commitments to support each other in responding to serious threats.

It also covers joint defense training in Indonesia, the assignment of senior Indonesian military officers to the Australian Defence Force, expanded military education exchanges, and a memorandum of understanding on Australian investment with Danantara, Indonesia’s sovereign wealth fund.
