Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Indonesian Foreign Affairs Ministry has extended its condolences to the people and governments of China and Nepal following devastating flash floods in the Gyirong border region.
“Indonesia expresses its deepest sympathy and condolences over the disaster in the Gyirong region, along the China-Nepal border, which has resulted in loss of life, injuries, and damage to public infrastructure,” the ministry’s spokesperson Vahd Nabyl A. Mulachela said in Jakarta on Thursday.
He affirmed Indonesia’s full support for the ongoing search, rescue, and relief operations conducted by Chinese and Nepalese authorities.
Mulachela added that the ministry is continuously monitoring the situation of Indonesian nationals in the affected areas through its embassies in Beijing and Dhaka, as well as its honorary consulate in Kathmandu.
As of Thursday, there have been no reports of Indonesians affected by the disaster. Approximately 45 Indonesian citizens currently reside in Nepal, with the majority living in Kathmandu and working in the hospitality sector.
The ministry is also closely tracking Indonesian tourists visiting the South Asian nation.
“To bolster our protection and monitoring efforts, the Indonesian Embassy in Dhaka has urged travel agencies accommodating Indonesian tourists to immediately report their whereabouts and conditions, particularly those engaged in mountain expeditions,” Mulachela said.
The ministry has strongly advised all Indonesians in the affected regions to remain vigilant and strictly follow directives issued by local authorities. In the event of an emergency, citizens can contact the embassy in Beijing at +86-186-1045-5488 or the embassy in Dhaka at +880-161-4444-552.
According to the Turkish news agency Anadolu, Chinese and Nepalese authorities reported that over 1,300 people, including nearly 900 foreign nationals, remain missing as search and rescue operations continue.
Based on satellite imagery, the flash floods were likely triggered by melting glacial ice blocks in the Himalayas.
