Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry is facilitating the repatriation of a 21-year-old Indonesian worker who died in a workplace accident at a manufacturing plant in Hiroshima, Japan, the ministry said.
The victim, identified by the initials IK, was a participant in Japan’s Technical Intern Training Program (TITP) who moved from Central Java in June 2024.
He died on Wednesday, September 2, after becoming trapped in an industrial paint mixer at a manufacturing plant in Otake, Hiroshima, the ministry said in a statement received here Friday.
“The deceased’s remains have been transported from Hiroshima to Tokyo in preparation for repatriation to Indonesia,” the ministry’s Director for the Protection of Indonesian Citizens, Heni Hamidah, said.
Hamidah said the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo and Consulate General in Osaka are coordinating with Japanese police, who are investigating the incident.
The ministry and relevant authorities are also ensuring the remains are handled properly and that the victim’s rights are protected in accordance with applicable regulations.
Japan’s Kyodo News reported that an emergency call was made on Wednesday evening after a man was found bleeding, with his neck trapped inside a mixer at materials maker Toda Kogyo Corp.’s plant in Otake.
Local police said the victim had been working alone, operating a mixing machine measuring about 1.5 meters in diameter and depth. Authorities are reviewing surveillance footage to determine the accident’s exact sequence and cause.
