Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia’s Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education reported that more than 1,900 education facilities in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) have resumed their classes after the August 15 earthquake.
Minister Abdul Mu’ti said educational activities were continuing, either through in-person classes held in makeshift classrooms or via distance learning.
“The progress of post-earthquake education facility recovery in NTT has shown positive results. Some 1,931 educational facilities serving 171,476 students have resumed their classes to date,” Mu’ti stated here on Saturday.
He explained that some 1,504 schools conduct their classes in makeshift classrooms, while 392 schools conduct distance learning, and 35 educational facilities had resumed in-person classes normally at school.
Meanwhile, Mu’ti said the ministry had distributed 100 large tents for makeshift classrooms to regions affected by the earthquake as of September 3, with 28 of them dispatched to Manggarai District and 27 to East Manggarai District.
The ministry further provided 9,500 reading books and 9,500 children’s souvenirs, 5,500 school kit packages, 1,500 family kits, and 500 basic food packages to families in affected districts.
Financial assistance amounting to Rp1.1 billion had also been disbursed for clearing the debris in schools suffering major damage due to the earthquake, he added.
Mu’ti said the ministry will ensure a smooth transition and recovery through the provision of more emergency classrooms, psychosocial services for children, sanitation facility reconstruction, and safety assessments on school buildings.
The ministry targets the provision of a total of 3,763 units of emergency classrooms and improves the condition at 1,504 schools that are still relying on makeshift facilities.
“With the hard work and participation of all parties, we hope that the recovery of all educational facilities affected by the earthquake in NTT will proceed smoothly and swiftly,” he said.
“Educational facilities must be restored to help rebuild joy and hope for local children as they work toward a better future,” Mu’ti added.
