No sea-level anomalies during Anak Krakatau eruption: BMKG

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) detected no sea-level anomalies around the Sunda Strait as of 7 a.m. Sunday, despite geomagnetic disturbances and increased volcanic lightning linked to Mount Anak Krakatau’s eruptive activity.

The agency based its assessment on data from 20 tsunami gauge sensors around the Sunda Strait.

Acting BMKG Deputy for Geophysics Ardhasena Sopaheluwakan said sensors in South Lampung and Serang detected geomagnetic disturbances alongside increased volcanic lightning over the previous 12 hours.

The disturbances were less intense than those recorded during the initial eruption, Sopaheluwakan said, referring to the ongoing activity at Mount Anak Krakatau.

Analysis using High-Frequency Radar Array technology in Carita and Tanjung Lesung indicated a less than 40 percent probability of a tsunami, with waves remaining around one meter high.

BMKG is strengthening national preparedness for potential impacts from the eruption through an integrated monitoring system using multiple instruments continuously, around the clock.

The multi-instrument monitoring system works with analysis from the Geological Agency’s Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation, known as PVMBG.

The system is also strengthening coordination among agencies to support rapid decision-making and safeguard aviation and coastal areas around the Sunda Strait.

BMKG urged people, particularly those living or working along the Sunda Strait coast, to remain vigilant while staying calm and following official information.
