Bandung, West Java (ANTARA) – The Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry’s Geological Agency said volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau’s eruption in the Sunda Strait has spread across five provinces, namely Banten, West Java, Jakarta, Lampung, and Bengkulu.
Head of the Geological Agency Lana Saria said here on Sunday that volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau has been observed spreading in the atmosphere toward Banten, parts of West Java and Jakarta, as well as Lampung and Bengkulu.
The Geological Agency based its findings on combined data from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia platform, the Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre (VAAC) Darwin, and Himawari-9 satellite imagery analysis by the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).
According to her, the direction and range of the volcanic ash spread can change depending on wind direction and speed at various altitudes.
She added that the height of the eruption column, the duration of the eruption, and the amount of material ejected also influence the direction and extent of the ash spread.
“Therefore, the direction of the ash spread can change within a relatively short time and must be updated based on the latest meteorological conditions,” she said.
Saria urged the public to avoid outdoor activities and follow official information issued by the government on developments regarding Mount Anak Krakatau’s eruption.
According to her, the potential for broader impact could increase if the eruption column grows higher, the eruption lasts longer, or wind carries volcanic ash toward flight paths and populated areas.
She said the Geological Agency continues to coordinate with aviation authorities to share information on developments and the spread of volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau for flight safety.
“The impact on airport operations is determined by aviation authorities based on actual ash data, dispersal forecasts, and flight safety standards,” she said.
She stressed that the public needs to follow official information, as the spread of volcanic ash cannot be projected based on a single eruption event alone.
