Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia’s House of Representatives (DPR) has approved a bill to amend the country’s 2002 Broadcasting Law, paving the way for further discussions with the government.
Deputy House Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad led the approval at a plenary session in Jakarta on Tuesday after eight political party factions submitted their written views.
“Does the honorable House approve the bill proposed by Commission I as a House initiative?” Dasco asked, prompting legislators to approve it.
One proposed change would increase the number of commissioners on the Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI) from nine to 11.
Commission I Deputy Chairman Dave Laksono said earlier that the increase would accommodate broader representation of interests within the KPI.
“The proposed composition includes seven representatives from parliament, one from the government, one from the public, one from broadcasters, and one from academia,” Dave said.
The bill also introduces rules governing over-the-top (OTT) digital media platforms, aiming to provide legal certainty and equal responsibilities across the evolving media ecosystem.
“The aim is not to expand restrictions on OTT platforms, but to establish clear, fair, and proportionate governance amid changes in the media ecosystem,” Dave said.
