Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia and India have agreed to strengthen cooperation in telecommunications technology and services, laying the groundwork for both countries to boost innovation and develop their future digital ecosystems.
The partnership follows up on the Joint Leaders’ Statement issued during the Indian Prime Minister’s visit to Indonesia, which was received by President Prabowo Subianto.
“Indonesia aims to ensure that digital transformation empowers its people to master, develop, and create future technologies. Cooperation with India serves as a strategic avenue to strengthen these capabilities,” Minister of Communication and Digital Meutya Hafid said in a statement on Tuesday.
The agreement is formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which will serve as a foundation for both countries to develop telecommunications technology and strengthen their digital ecosystems.
The final draft of the cooperation document was exchanged in the presence of the leaders of both countries. To solidify the partnership, Hafid and India’s Minister of Communications Jyotiraditya M. Scindia agreed to sign the MoU.
According to Hafid, the cooperation will go beyond strengthening currently deployed telecommunications technologies to include the development and mastery of next-generation technologies.
She highlighted joint research and development efforts covering 4G and 5G technologies, exploration of 6G, and future technologies such as quantum technology and advanced wireless communications.
“We are also discussing the technologies that will define future connectivity and digital competitiveness. Therefore, we must prepare for research, human resource development, and industry collaboration starting now,” she said.
She stressed the growing importance of telecommunications technology amid rising demand for reliable and resilient connectivity.
Through the partnership, cooperation with India is expected to support knowledge exchange, capacity building, and innovation in both countries.
The cooperation will also focus on strengthening communication systems for disaster management. The two countries will explore emergency communication systems and disaster risk reduction solutions to keep telecommunications services running during crises and natural disasters.
“For Indonesia, connectivity is also a matter of resilience. When disaster strikes, communication networks must remain a vital link connecting the public, the government, and emergency services,” Hafid explained.
She noted that the cooperation would be implemented through various programs, including human resource capacity building through training, upskilling, and reskilling initiatives.
Indonesia and India also plan to create opportunities for research and development collaboration involving academia and industry, while strengthening public-private partnerships (PPPs).
Business players from both countries will also have opportunities to collaborate. Through business-to-business (B2B) partnerships, telecommunications and technology companies from Indonesia and India can develop joint projects and leverage each other’s industrial strengths and capabilities.
To ensure the sustainability of the cooperation, Indonesia and India will establish an annual forum known as the Indonesian-Indian Telco Dialogue. The forum will be held alternately in the two countries to evaluate program progress, discuss challenges, and formulate future work plans.
The MoU will be valid for five years from the date of signing and may be extended upon the written agreement of both parties.
Hafid expressed hope that the partnership would bring tangible benefits to the public. She said the cooperation should create more opportunities for Indonesian talent, researchers, and industry players to contribute to technology development while ensuring that digital transformation benefits the public and the national economy.
