Jakarta (ANTARA) – The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) is developing an Adsorbed Natural Gas (ANG) technology projected to serve as a household alternative to Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG).
BRIN Head Arif Satria stated that the technology, which utilizes Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs), will deliver exceptionally high usage efficiency.
“There will be a twofold increase in efficiency, roughly 1.5 to two times greater, and this will mark an energy revolution in Indonesia,” Satria said during the Energy Week 2026 event in Jakarta on Tuesday.
Satria illustrated this by noting that while a household typically consumes one conventional 3-kilogram gas cylinder in 10 days, ANG technology could extend that duration to 20–25 days.
He explained that the eco-friendly innovation is being developed in collaboration with Kyoto-based expert Susumu Kitagawa through a joint laboratory in Serpong, South Tangerang.
“We hope to launch this innovation in 2027 and subsequently roll it out to the public,” Satria said.
According to him, developing the gas energy source supports BRIN’s effort to fulfill national mandates for energy independence and sovereignty, aiming to place the nation on par with developed countries.
Robust innovation and a conducive ecosystem connecting laboratories, universities, industry, the government, and the public are essential for national energy transformation, he added.
“Developing renewable energy is a key priority, given our immense potential in solar, geothermal, wind, and bioenergy, as well as various other clean energy sources,” Satria stated.
Meanwhile, Higher Education, Science, and Technology Minister Brian Yuliarto called technology downstreaming initiatives spearheaded by BRIN and university researchers the most logical and sustainable solution.
“With robust research, exceptional talent, and industry involvement, Indonesia is capable of achieving energy independence, strengthening its national industry, and advancing to become a developed nation,” Yuliarto said.
