Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia’s Tourism Ministry ensured the rehabilitation and recovery after fire of Sade Traditional Village in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, was proceeding safely and sustainably.

“Our measure of success is not only how many buildings stand again, but when people are empowered again, culture stays alive, the economy moves, and tourists can visit safely,” the Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana said in a statement received here on Monday.

During her site visit on Sunday (Oct 11), Putri Wardhana stressed the reconstruction of the village began on September 3 and marked by a traditional ritual called Nyemulak as a symbol of the groundbreaking for rebuilding the area with partners.

The initial construction phase prioritized restoring facilities that play an important role in the community’s social and cultural life, starting with a mosque, a sekenam as a gathering space, a semi-permanent museum, and proper bathrooms and toilets.

Reconstruction will be carried out comprehensively while maintaining the architectural characteristics of the traditional houses, the traditional spatial layout, and the Sasak community’s way of life that makes Sade distinctive.

During the process, Wardhana wanted cultural preservation to go hand in hand with improved safety for the community and tourists.

Therefore, rebuilding the village needs to integrate fire risk protection systems and emergency preparedness without losing the area’s authenticity.

The safety aspects include providing fire protection systems, clear evacuation routes, water supply and fire extinguishers, improved sanitation, and supporting infrastructure for emergency response.

The effort is important to ensure Sade Traditional Village is not only an attractive cultural tourism destination again, but also a safer, more resilient, and more comfortable environment for the community and tourists.

Besides infrastructure recovery, the Ministry has distributed business capital and work equipment assistance totaling Rp817.5 million.

The aid includes 15 gedogan weaving looms, capital for 69 micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), 70 packages of weaving raw materials, and 43 packages of non-weaving craft equipment.

As part of long-term recovery, the ministry has also prepared various training programs to improve the capacity and skills of local people in managing tourism activities and culture-based creative businesses.

The programs cover improving the skills of local tour guides, applying tourism safety and service standards, updating craft product catalogs, strengthening product identity and branding, and using digital marketing to reach wider markets.
