Indonesia pushes climate resilience to protect village livelihoods

Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Coordinating Ministry for Community Empowerment is promoting stronger resilience among village communities by integrating climate change information into community empowerment and poverty alleviation strategies.

“Resilience is not only about how communities are able to face disasters, but also how they can continue working, earning an income, and meeting their needs when exposed to climate change risks,” the ministry’s Assistant Deputy for Village and Rural Resilience, Diah Kusuma Pitasari, said on Tuesday.

Speaking at the fourth thematic focus group discussion on community empowerment, she explained that the initiative is important because changing weather patterns and rising disaster risks can disrupt livelihoods, reduce incomes, and threaten household food security in rural communities.

The government must therefore ensure that climate change does not become an additional factor pushing people into poverty. According to Diah, climate information must go beyond serving as technical data.

Instead, village governments and communities must use this information to determine anticipatory measures, particularly to protect livelihoods and prevent poor and vulnerable families from falling deeper into poverty.

To this end, the ministry is encouraging the integration of climate information into village development planning and budgeting.

This approach would enable development and empowerment programs to reflect the climate risks and actual conditions faced by communities in each region.

The ministry is also encouraging closer coordination among existing village-level initiatives, including Disaster-Resilient Villages, the Climate Village Program, and Climate Field Schools.

These programs need to be linked so that knowledge of climate risks can be translated into concrete action at the community level.

The collaboration is intended not only to improve disaster preparedness but also to protect productive activities, strengthen food security, and help communities sustain their incomes amid mounting climate pressures.
