Indonesia speeds up post-disaster health facility recovery in Sumatra

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesian Minister of Home Affairs Muhammad Tito Karnavian said the recovery of healthcare facilities affected by disasters in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra continues to be accelerated.

Speaking in Jakarta on Thursday, Karnavian said the acceleration of recovery efforts has allowed nearly 100 percent of regional public hospitals and 100 percent of community health centers to resume operations, leaving only six support health centers still undergoing repairs.

According to him, floods and landslides that hit the three provinces in late November last year had impacted dozens of regional public hospitals, hundreds of community health centers, and hundreds of support health centers.

He said the recovery of health facilities was achieved through efforts by the Ministry of Health, including the deployment of medical volunteers from Jakarta, as well as the utilization of regular budgets and non-governmental support.

The Indonesian government has targeted the post-disaster rehabilitation and reconstruction process across the three provinces to take three years, spanning from 2026 to 2028.

Karnavian emphasized that recovery is not solely the responsibility of the central government, but also requires the active involvement of regional governments to ensure affected public facilities and services are fully restored.

To that end, the Ministry of Home Affairs held a virtual coordination meeting with regional heads in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra to provide update on the recovery of the healthcare sector while urging the acceleration of rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts.

He expressed hope that progress in restoring health facilities would encourage regional governments to expedite the spending of financial assistance readied by the central government.

According to Karnavian, the realization of additional regional financial assistance remains uneven. A number of regions have disbursed up to 60 percent, while others remain below 10 percent despite entering mid-October.

“Recovery efforts must be carried out collaboratively between the central government, which has allotted the budget, as well as ministries and agencies and regional governments, which also receive funding,” he said.

The central government, he added, would provide guidance and assistance to regional authorities to ensure that disbursed aid is effectively utilized to accelerate post-disaster recovery.
