Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesian Foreign Minister Arrmanatha Nasir has urged Indonesian citizens living in Europe to exercise extreme caution and avoid areas affected by mass protests and political demonstrations as unrest spreads across the region.

The advisory comes amid violent demonstrations in France and reports of various unrest in neighboring Belgium, fueled by public anger over the rising cost of living and concerns about deteriorating public services, including education.

Speaking in Jakarta on Thursday after a bilateral meeting with Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong, Arrmanatha said the government, through its diplomatic missions, was closely monitoring the unfolding unrest. He emphasized that the safety of Indonesian citizens remained its top priority.

“We urge Indonesian citizens in Europe to remain vigilant, look after themselves, and avoid getting involved in local political affairs,” Arrmanatha said.

He advised students and expatriates to focus on their primary commitments, including education and employment, while following security guidance issued by Indonesian diplomatic missions and local authorities.

The advisory follows widespread protests that erupted across France on October 17.

Demonstrations involving students, trade unions, and other groups escalated in several cities, with violent clashes, looting, and damage to public buildings reported. In Limoges, a fire severely damaged the historic city hall, while public buildings and other sites were also targeted in Marseille and other cities.

According to figures released by French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez, approximately 550,000 people took part in demonstrations nationwide, including around 110,000 in Paris. Authorities also reported hundreds of arrests, with the total rising as investigations continued.

The unrest has raised concerns about the potential spread of demonstrations to neighboring countries. Belgium has also seen protests over public policy and budget measures, although the scale and circumstances of the reported incidents require further verification.

Indonesian diplomatic missions across Europe are continuing to monitor security developments and provide updates and safety guidance to Indonesian nationals living in the region.
