Indonesia to host D-8 Summit in 2027 after regional conflict delay

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia will host the Developing Eight (D-8) Summit in 2027 following the postponement of this year’s high-level gathering due to escalating Middle East tensions, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed Thursday.

The summit, originally scheduled for April 2026, was deferred following extensive consultations among member states in light of regional instability and ongoing geopolitical conflict in the Middle East.

“Indonesia remains firmly committed to hosting the D-8 Summit next year,” ministry spokesperson Vahd Nabyl A. Mulachela told reporters during a press briefing.

Mulachela explained that foreign ministry officials are coordinating with D-8 member states and the organization’s secretariat to finalize new dates to ensure maximum participation at the summit.

Domestic preparations are continuing across relevant ministries before a proposed schedule is submitted to President Prabowo Subianto for final approval.

Despite the postponement of the head-of-state gathering, Indonesia will maintain the momentum of its 2026–2027 chairmanship by advancing scheduled technical and ministerial-level programs.

“Although the leaders’ summit has been deferred, it does not mean we are putting our chairmanship agenda on hold,” Mulachela said.

Indonesia is chairing the organization under the theme: “Navigating Global Shifts: Strengthening Equality, Solidarity, and Cooperation for Shared Prosperity.”

Throughout the year, the country has hosted key side events, including preliminary policy dialogues, the D-8 Youth Dialogue in Surabaya, the D-8 Halal Expo in Jakarta, and the D-8 Business Forum in Tangerang.

Established in 1997 to foster economic cooperation among major Muslim-majority developing nations, the D-8 bloc comprises Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Turkiye, and Azerbaijan, which formally joined in December 2024.
