UN highlights Indonesia’s role in shaping global future

Jakarta (ANTARA) – The United Nations asked Indonesia to work together to renew multilateralism and address various global challenges, UN Resident Coordinator in Indonesia Gita Sabharwal said on Tuesday.

“Our task is to renew multilateralism for the world that is emerging,” Sabharwal said in a speech marking UN Day in Jakarta.

The visit of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to Jakarta last week and met Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto carried a clear message of recognition of Indonesia’s steadfast commitment to multilateralism and its growing role in shaping our common future, she said.

Indonesia’s leadership was reflected in its diplomacy, commitment to peace and UN peacekeeping, and efforts on climate change and sustainable development, Sabharwal said.

“And we see it in the enduring Bandung spirit, the conviction that the Global South must not simply have a voice in the global system, but also a hand in shaping it,” Sabharwal said.

Multilateralism has to mean something to people’s lives, she said, adding that the UN must evolve as Indonesia enters a new phase of development with bolder purposes and stronger capabilities.

Citing Guterres’ message for UN Day, Sabharwal said the world’s future depends on the ability to work together to advance peace, development, and human rights, choosing dialogue over division, cooperation over confrontation, and solidarity over fear.

The UN continues to support Indonesia’s development priorities, including efforts to improve maternal health services and emergency obstetric care at more than 9,000 community health centres, locally known as Puskesmas, through the adoption of improved standards.

It also supports the sustainable management of more than 5 million hectares of forests and peatlands, contributing to an estimated reduction of 8.1 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions.

Other initiatives include support for Indonesia’s 100-gigawatt solar energy roadmap, work with more than 1,200 factories to improve resource efficiency and competitiveness, and the expansion of climate-smart agriculture and sustainable value chains reaching 3.6 million people.
