Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto congratulated Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on his reelection as president of Brazil following the general election last weekend.
“Congratulations to my good friend and comrade, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, on his historic fourth victory in the presidential election of the Federative Republic of Brazil,” Prabowo said in a social media post on Wednesday.
Prabowo said the election results had reaffirmed the Brazilian people’s recognition of Lula’s remarkable leadership.
“I hope he is blessed with strength and good health to guide the continued progress of the Brazilian people,” he added.
Prabowo said Indonesia and Brazil had much to accomplish together, particularly in addressing “the great challenges of our time.”
He also called on his Brazilian counterpart to work together to “strengthen our strategic partnership and bring to life the friendship between our two nations.” In the same social media post, Prabowo also extended his congratulations to Lula in Portuguese.
Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court (TSE) declared Lula the winner of Sunday’s presidential runoff, securing him a fourth nonconsecutive term after he defeated Flávio Bolsonaro in a closely contested race.
According to Sputnik, with nearly all polling stations counted, the TSE reported that Lula had secured 51.76 percent of the valid votes, compared with Bolsonaro’s 48.24 percent, a margin of more than 4 million votes.
The result marks an unprecedented development in modern Brazilian political history. Since the introduction of the two-round presidential election system in 1989, Lula has become the first candidate to win a runoff after finishing second in the first round.
In the first round on October 4, Bolsonaro finished ahead with 47.03 percent of the valid votes, compared with Lula’s 45.16 percent, setting the stage for three weeks of intense campaigning across Latin America’s largest country.
Lula, who previously governed Brazil from 2003 to 2010 and returned to office in 2023 after winning the 2022 election, will begin his fourth presidential term on January 5, 2027.
