Indonesia expands fiber-optic networks for fast, affordable internet

Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Communication and Digital Affairs Ministry is rolling out a national strategy to expand fast and affordable fixed broadband access to households across Indonesia.

In a statement released Friday (October 30), Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Nezar Patria stated that the government aims to provide households with 100 Mbps fixed-line internet services at an estimated cost of Rp140,000 (approximately US$7.78), or strictly below Rp200,000 (US$11.11) per month.

Nezar emphasized that extending fiber-optic infrastructure directly into residential areas is a strategic initiative designed to cut communication costs, enhance connectivity quality, and drive economic productivity.

“Internet costs can be reduced by expanding fixed broadband. We need to extend fiber-optic networks into households, allowing families to share a single connection,” Nezar said.

He noted that the shared-connection model will deliver a significant positive economic impact for households—empowering families to leverage high-speed internet for education, remote work, business development, and public services.

The fixed broadband rollout forms a core pillar of the government’s broader effort to reinforce the nation’s foundational digital infrastructure.

In addition to fiber-optic expansion, the ministry has set a target to accelerate 5G technology adoption from its current level of below 10 percent up to 30 to 40 percent over the next three to five years.

Through these combined initiatives, the ministry seeks to make national digital infrastructure increasingly inclusive, ensuring wider public participation in Indonesia’s growing digital economy.
