Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia will present legislative steps to support climate targets through the Just Climate Change Control Bill at the 31st United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP31) in Turkiye, People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Deputy Speaker Eddy Soeparno said.
Soeparno said at a media briefing held by the Government Communication Agency (Bakom) in Jakarta on Wednesday that the Indonesian delegation will present efforts to accelerate the energy transition, waste-to-energy processing, and legislative initiatives to combat climate change.
“There are three bills we are working on in parliament. One is the Climate Change Control Bill, and at the proposal of Environment Minister Jumhur Hidayat, it is now the Just Climate Change Control Bill,” Soeparno said.
Indonesia is also finalizing the New and Renewable Energy Bill and a revision to the Electricity Law.
“In my view, the legislation we are currently working on intensively, especially the Just Climate Change Control Bill, is very relevant to be raised and presented at COP31,” he added.
On energy policy, Soeparno stated that Indonesia is ready to affirm its commitment to making the energy transition the foundation of economic growth, targeting new and renewable energy to reach 70 percent of the national energy mix by 2045.
Efforts to accelerate waste-to-energy processing will also be presented at COP31 to address Indonesia’s waste management challenges and reduce methane emissions.
Soeparno noted that COP31 offers Indonesia an opportunity to affirm the role of its blue carbon reserves as a critical foundation for global climate action.
These initiatives will be pursued through strengthened regulation and governance, cross-sector collaboration, and long-term financing.
“For us, climate action and the energy transition are not just sustainability programs, but also a development strategy for Indonesia to focus on sustainability in the future,” Soeparno said.
