Jakarta (ANTARA) – Statistics Indonesia (BPS) recorded a 0.69-point increase in Indonesia’s Human Development Index (HDI), bringing it to 76.59 in 2026, with four provinces seeing their status upgraded.
The four provinces are Bali and East Kalimantan, which moved from the “high” to the “very high” category, as well as East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) and South Papua, which climbed from “medium” to “high.”
“Since 2020, Indonesia’s HDI has consistently improved,” BPS Deputy for National Accounts and Statistical Analysis Moh. Edy Mahmud stated during a press conference in Jakarta on Thursday.
Overall, of the total 38 provinces in Indonesia, five have achieved “very high” human development status, 30 fall into the “high” category, two are classified as “medium,” and one remains in the “low” category.
The five provinces with “very high” HDI scores are DKI Jakarta (85.88), Yogyakarta (83.43), Riau Islands (81.12), East Kalimantan (80.09), and Bali (80.03).
Meanwhile, Highland Papua remains the province that recorded the lowest HDI at 55.25.
BPS explained that the national HDI growth in 2026 was driven by improvements across all key indicators, health, education, and standard of living.
In terms of health, life expectancy at birth rose by 0.21 years to 74.68 years.
“This means that in 2026, newborns are expected to live to an average age of 74.68 years,” Mahmud said.
In the educational field, expected years of schooling rose by 0.04 years to 13.34 years. Meanwhile, the mean years of schooling for residents aged 25 and older increased by 0.09 years to 9.16 years, equivalent to completing ninth grade.
Improvements were also seen in the decent standard of living dimension. Adjusted real per capita annual expenditure grew by Rp566,000 (around US$31.3), rising from Rp12.80 million (US$709) in 2025 to Rp13.37 million (US$740) in 2026.
