Banda Aceh, Aceh (ANTARA) – Aceh’s Panglima Laot customary maritime authority views peace as a blessing from God that must be protected and preserved, its secretary-general said Monday.
“We should use Peace Day and Independence Day to reflect, recite prayers and seek guidance through worship,” Azwir Nazar said in Aceh Besar.
To mark Indonesia’s 81st Independence Day, the authority also barred fishermen across Aceh from going to sea on Monday, Aug. 17.
He said staying ashore on Independence Day has long been customary in Aceh, with the practice agreed upon by traditional maritime communities across the province’s lhok, or coastal jurisdictions.
Panglima Laot is Aceh’s customary maritime authority overseeing fishermen. Issues involving fishermen and activities at sea fall within its jurisdiction.
Azwir said Panglima Laot’s role includes preserving maritime customs, including determining days when fishermen are prohibited from going to sea.
Besides Independence Day, other no-fishing days include three days each for Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, tsunami commemorations, three days during each traditional sea thanksgiving ceremony and Fridays.
Panglima Laot urged fishermen and communities to spend their days ashore increasing prayers and remembrance of God in their respective areas.
Amid current conditions, the authority also urged fishermen to protect one another. “Peace is a blessing from God. It is our duty to protect and preserve it,” Azwir said.
He said fishermen in several areas were still dealing with the effects of hydrometeorological disasters, including damaged homes, waterways, fish and shrimp farms, fishing facilities and other infrastructure.
“On this Independence Day, we hope the central and Aceh governments will continue supporting fishermen whose livelihoods are becoming increasingly difficult amid economic pressures,” Azwir said.
