Jakarta (ANTARA) – Research development into the cause of acute kidney injury in Indonesia continued, the Ministry of Health spokesperson, Mohammad Syahril, noted here on Tuesday.

“Currently, we are conducting research to know exactly what cause this acute kidney injury,” he remarked.

“We suspect that one of the causes of this kidney injury is poisoning, which can come from food, drink, and drug,” he explained.

The ministry, along with the Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM), continue to examine several other possibilities over the cause of acute kidney injury.

“The content of syrup drugs should truly be analyzed to know which ones caused kidney poisoning. After the research result comes out, the BPOM has the responsibility to evaluate,” he remarked.

Meanwhile, the government has undertaken various policies to prevent additional acute kidney injury victims.

The government has temporarily halted syrup drug usage for children as a quick decision to prevent new cases, Syahril remarked.

“For those who are already sick, we take actions, such as by providing hemodialysis and antidote,” he explained.

He noted that the condition of 10 out of the 11 acute kidney injury patients treated at the Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM), Jakarta, had improved after they were given the Fomepizole antidote.

The Fomepizole provision was based on the recommendation from the World Health Organization (WHO).

Data shows that administering Fomepizole to patients suffering from acute kidney injury suspected to be caused by intoxication had an effectiveness of over 90 percent.

“There are no further deaths and exacerbation. These children can already urinate. Moreover, from the result of the laboratory examination, the ethylene glycol content from these 10 children is no longer detected,” he stated.
