AirNav says airport closures as safety mitigation amid Krakatau ash

Jakarta (ANTARA) – State-owned flight navigation service provider AirNav Indonesia has stated the temporary closure of affected airports is a mitigation to ensure flight safety after Mount Anak Krakatau’s eruption.

“This is a mitigation measure to support flight safety, taking into account the spread of volcanic ash in the airspace,” AirNav Indonesia EVP of Corporate Secretary, Hermana Soegijantoro, said in a statement here on Monday.

Soegijantoro added AirNav Indonesia continues to monitor developments in airspace conditions and the spread of volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau.

“Aeronautical information will continue to be updated according to actual conditions and flight safety information,” he said.

AirNav Indonesia is also continuously coordinating with aviation stakeholders to ensure information on airspace conditions and flight navigation services is delivered in a timely manner.

He mentioned six airports remain closed due to the spread of volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau, in order to maintain flight operational safety.

“AirNav has again updated aeronautical information on the operational status of several airports affected by the spread of volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau,” he said.

The update reflects volcanic ash monitoring by the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), showing the ash has spread to Banten, Jakarta, West Java, Lampung, and Bengkulu, while Mt. Anak Krakatau remains at Level III or Alert status.

Previously, according to the updated Notice to Airmen (NOTAM), six airports remained closed due to the spread of volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau.

The affected airports are Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK) in Tangerang, Halim Perdanakusuma Airport (HLP) in Jakarta, Radin Inten II Airport (TKG) in Lampung, Husein Sastranegara Airport (BDO) in Bandung, Budiarto Airport (RTO) in Curug, and Pondok Cabe Airport (PCB).
