Tangerang (ANTARA) – Volcanic ash from the eruption of Indonesia’s Mount Anak Krakatau has affected most areas of Tangerang city in Banten province, the local disaster management agency (BPBD) said on Sunday.
“According to this morning’s report, the ash has already reached the Karang Tengah area. That means most of the city has been affected, as the area borders Jakarta,” said Mahdiar, Head of the Tangerang City BPBD told ANTARA.
Based on information from Indonesia’s Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG), the Darwin Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre (VAAC) and an analysis of Himawari-9 satellite imagery, two clusters of volcanic ash were identified at 9 p.m. local time on Saturday.
Volcanic ash from the surface up to an altitude of 20,000 feet was observed moving southeast to south, covering parts of Banten and West Java, and nearby waters.
Meanwhile, ash from the surface up to an altitude of 50,000 feet was observed moving southwest to northwest, covering parts of Banten, Lampung, Bengkulu, and West Sumatra, as well as the southern part of the Sunda Strait and the Indian Ocean west of Lampung and Banten.
“The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) has issued an advisory urging residents in areas affected by the volcanic ash to remain vigilant, protect their eyes, wear masks, and reduce outdoor activities,” Mahdiar said.
Light volcanic ashfall caused by the eruption had begun affecting the coastal areas of Banten, said Deni Mardiono, Head of the Mount Anak Krakatau Volcano Monitoring Post. The volcanic material was carried by winds blowing eastward toward the Banten coastline.
“Mount Anak Krakatau remains at Level III, or Alert. The public and tourists are prohibited from approaching within a three kilometer danger radius of the crater,” he said.
