Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (ANTARA) – Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had contacted Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto to discuss measures in tackling haze caused by forest and land fires in Kalimantan and elsewhere.

“The haze situation is indeed worrying. I have personally contacted President Prabowo and he agreed to take the necessary steps,” Anwar said, according to an ANTARA report from Malaysia on Thursday.

He said Malaysia’s foreign and environment ministers had also contacted their Indonesian counterparts to coordinate efforts to tackle forest and land fires and the resulting haze.

Malaysia has increased cloud-seeding operations almost daily to help easing the haze, Anwar said, adding the situation remained a concern.

Anwar also said he had instructed the foreign minister to contact the ASEAN Secretariat to seek a meeting of ASEAN environment ministers focused on tackling the haze.
