Denpasar, Bali (ANTARA) – Police in Indonesia’s resort island of Bali are investigating the ownership of firearms and dozens of rounds of ammunition discovered during a drug raid at a house in Denpasar, where officers arrested a man suspected of narcotics abuse.
First Inspector I Gede Adi Saputra Jaya, spokesperson for Denpasar City Police, said the suspect claimed the firearms and airsoft guns had been left with him by several people for repairs.
The investigation began after police received reports from the public alleging narcotics abuse at the property in East Denpasar, Adi said.
Officers from the police narcotics unit arrested a 30-year-old man identified by his initials ARMP, a resident of Kintamani in Bali’s Bangli District, who was found on the house terrace.
A search uncovered one package containing purple powder and tablets suspected to be the synthetic drug ecstasy, he said on Monday.
Officers then searched the interior of the house and found several firearms, airsoft guns and ammunition, broadening the investigation beyond the suspected drug offense.
Evidence seized included five firearms, four airsoft guns, 55 rounds of 38-caliber ammunition, five rounds of 78-caliber ammunition, two rounds of 9 mm ammunition, one 32 ACP cartridge, five 8 mm blank cartridges, two 22 LR cartridges, one magazine and 33 CO2 gas cylinders, Adi said.
The discovery prompted coordination between the narcotics and criminal investigation units to determine whether the firearms were legally owned and to establish the origin of the ammunition.
Police said ARMP works as a mixed martial arts and boxing instructor in the Canggu area.
He also told investigators he worked as part of a private security, or bodyguard, team and had been a member of a tactical shooting club in Yogyakarta between 2016 and 2018.
According to his statement, none of the firearms, airsoft guns, air guns or ammunition belonged to him, but had been entrusted to him by several individuals for repair.
ARMP also admitted using narcotics to calm himself when experiencing pressure or stress, police said.
Investigators from the Denpasar City Police criminal investigation unit are continuing to question the suspect to verify the legality of the firearms, identify their owners and trace those who allegedly left the weapons in his possession.
