Bali SAR office steps up preparedness with aircraft accident plan

Denpasar, Bali (ANTARA) – The Bali Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) has developed an aircraft accident contingency plan to anticipate the high volume of aviation activity in Bali.

“Preparedness must start before an incident occurs, with careful planning, strong coordination, sufficient resources, and a shared understanding among all parties,” the Head of Bali Basarnas, I Nyoman Sidakarya, said in a statement on Friday (October 16).

According to him, the activity involved 80 participants from various elements to achieve comprehensive preparedness in the South Bali region.

The activity was prompted by heavy air traffic in Bali, with I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport recording 143,312 aircraft movements in 2025.

In addition to commercial flights, increasing helicopter mobility for business and tourism purposes is also a serious concern in mapping emergency-prone areas, Sidakarya continued.

“A contingency plan is a shared agreement and commitment regarding the tasks, roles, resources, and coordination mechanisms that must be implemented in an aircraft accident,” he explained.

He detailed that the forum focused on an emergency scenario, modeling an aircraft missing from radar in the waters off Serangan, South Denpasar.

Bali Basarnas conducted an in-depth assessment of these scenarios to strengthen operational coordination and ensure the swift and effective division of responsibilities among agencies.

Participants also received technical training from two speakers from the Directorate of Search and Rescue Operations at the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas).

Sidakarya said the participation of central government officials in developing the aircraft accident contingency plan highlighted the importance of aligning disaster management procedures at the regional and national levels.

Retno Budiharto, representing the Basarnas Operations Director, also stressed the need to implement the contingency plan after the event.

“We hope this contingency plan will help each party fulfill its respective roles and responsibilities while strengthening coordination, solidarity, collaboration, and synergy among all Search and Rescue personnel in Denpasar,” Budiharto noted.
