Pariaman (ANTARA) – About 2,000 participants from across Indonesia joined the Barefoot Running Padang Pariaman event on Saturday, running shoeless along a beach in Batang Anai Subdistrict, West Sumatra.
Padang Pariaman Regent John Kenedy Azis said the event was the first barefoot running race held on Sumatra Island, attracting runners from multiple regions.
He noted that the strong turnout demonstrated Padang Pariaman’s growing appeal as a national sports destination.
John emphasized that the event was not only about sports, but also tourism and environmental preservation—allowing participants to enjoy the region’s natural beauty while exercising.
“This proves Padang Pariaman has strong potential as a sports tourism destination,” John said.
He added that the event provided a direct boost to local businesses, including accommodations, restaurants, transportation services, and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
The Padang Pariaman Regency administration plans to continue hosting similar sports events to draw tourists and fuel local economic growth.
“The more tourists who visit, the greater the economic impact felt by our residents,” John said.
Participant Imelda urged organizers to make the race an annual affair, highlighting its health and recreational benefits for the community.
“If possible, this activity should definitely be held again,” Imelda said.
The event combined competitive races with a fun-run format featuring prizes for participants.
Padang Pariaman Tourism, Youth, and Sports Agency Head Anton Wira Tanjung said the event was initially conceived as a regional race for West Sumatra.
However, interest quickly surged beyond its original scope as runners registered from across Indonesia and abroad, Anton said.
Organizers hope the barefoot running event will solidify Padang Pariaman’s reputation as a premier sports tourism hub while unlocking ongoing economic opportunities for local communities.
