Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia’s state-backed Islamic charity, Baznas, is constructing three emergency mosques for communities devastated by a magnitude 7.7 earthquake that struck East Nusa Tenggara province on Aug. 15.
The initiative aims to restore access to places of worship for displaced residents as recovery operations continue across the eastern province.
“Baznas has been working to deliver humanitarian aid, including establishing temporary mosques to allow residents to pray safely,” Baznas Chairman Sodik Mudjahid said in a statement on Monday.
Two of the temporary structures are being built in Nagekeo Regency, while a third will serve residents in East Manggarai Regency.
Local volunteers and residents are assisting with the construction.
Deden Nurjaman, a representative from the Baznas disaster response unit, said one of the temporary mosques is taking shape in the courtyard of the severely damaged Darul Alam Talage Mosque in East Manggarai.
The 10-by-12-meter makeshift structure is expected to be completed within days.
“God willing, this facility will be ready for use in three to four days, in time for Friday congregational prayers,” Nurjaman said.
The agency stated it remains committed to tailoring relief to survivors’ immediate needs.
Alongside the worship structures, Baznas emergency teams are distributing food, running public kitchens, and providing clean drinking water across affected areas.
