Baznas operates oxygen health center, deploys personnel to fight fires

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia’s National Zakat Agency (Baznas) has deployed disaster-response teams to fight forest and land fires across the country, particularly in Kalimantan, while operating an oxygen health center in Palangka Raya.

The oxygen center in Central Kalimantan has provided health services to 261 people, said Idy Muzayyad, a Baznas executive overseeing distribution, utilization and empowerment.

He said Baznas was fighting fires and distributing humanitarian aid to affected residents, firefighters and volunteers.

“As of Saturday, October 24, Baznas had deployed 70 response personnel from various regions, supported by medical staff in Central Kalimantan,” Idy said in a statement issued in Jakarta on Monday.

Baznas teams were fighting fires in South Kalimantan, West Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, West Sulawesi and Central Kalimantan, while setting up refreshment stations for firefighters and volunteers.

The agency also distributed masks to residents and students, ready-to-eat meals, ultra-high-temperature milk and bread for children, clean water, and multivitamins for residents and volunteers.

The aid reached several affected areas, including Mount Ciremai National Park in West Java.

“Fighting forest and land fires requires public concern and cooperation. Baznas will continue providing humanitarian support through firefighting and assistance for affected communities,” Idy said.

Taufik Hidayat, deputy head of Baznas’ Disaster Response Team (BTB), said teams were still fighting fires in Sebangau district, Palangka Raya, Central Kalimantan.

Recurring fires over the past several days have kept the team at the scene to continue firefighting, he said.

“The fires have recurred for several days, and our team is still here fighting them. We hope they end soon so people, especially in Central Kalimantan, can breathe clean air again,” Taufik said.
