Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) is seeking to improve the safety and welfare of fishermen through the 2022 Fisherman Weather School (SLCN).

“The SLCN, which is regularly hosted by the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency in many coastal areas, is an actual form of the agency’s support for the development of the Indonesian fisheries and marine sector,” BMKG head, Dwikorita Karnawati, said in a statement on Saturday.

The SCLN, which was conducted in Tayu Wetan village, Tayu sub-district, Pati district, Central Java, on Wednesday (August 10, 2022) was themed “SLCN Creates Great, Happy, and Prosperous Fishermen.”

The school was held as part of the government’s measures to increase fishermen’s understanding and knowledge of maritime weather, Karnawati informed. Apart from efforts to minimize the risk of marine accidents, SCLN is being pursued so that fishermen can increase their catch.

Pati district has marine and fishery resources spread over approximately 60 kilometers, over 4 miles in width, starting from the coastline to the sea.

It also has ponds for brackish water fisheries covering an area of approximately 10,329 hectares (ha), and ever-growing freshwater fishery resources.

Pati already has the necessary resources that can be developed to meet community expectations. It also has new sources of growth that can help achieve the goals and objectives of the marine and fisheries sector’s development.

However, an uncertain climate has become the main challenge for the marine and fisheries sector in recent years, although BMKG has continued to observe, analyze, and predict weather conditions, as well as waves. As a result of climate uncertainty, fatal marine accidents have become common.

The education of fishermen is expected to help them understand when to sail by observing the wave height and work in a safe zone to catch fish properly without wasting time and endangering themselves.

Karnawati said she expects the fishermen to make the most of the school and weather information received from the agency so that they can be safe at sea and earn plenty of riches by tapping into the marine resources in their area.

“If, at any time, there is an early warning, the agency can disseminate information, forecasts can be immediately disseminated. However, the information must be understood by users. The users who need it are fishermen,” she explained.

A member of Commission V of the House of Representatives, Sudewo, asked fishermen to take SLCN seriously so that their knowledge increases.

He also requested that the school be promoted among all fishermen so that all of them can apply the knowledge gained from it to optimize their work while still exercising caution.

“Disseminate the information to others. God willing, in the years to come, we will do it again. This knowledge is very useful,” Sudewo said.
