BMKG warns of extreme weather, high waves across Indonesia

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) on Wednesday urged the public, maritime operators, and aviation authorities to remain vigilant against extreme weather, high ocean waves, and potential tidal flooding across the archipelago.

A cyclonic circulation in the northern Pacific Ocean, north of Biak Island, has created a wind convergence zone that is accelerating rain cloud development, particularly over the Philippine Sea, BMKG forecaster Ranika said in a statement monitored in Jakarta.

The agency issued early warnings for widespread cumulonimbus cloud formations, which could trigger severe weather across parts of Sumatra, Kalimantan, Papua, the Karimata Strait, and the North Natuna Sea.

Aviation authorities were advised to closely track meteorological updates to safeguard flight operations.

Most major Indonesian cities are forecast to experience light rainfall or heavy cloud cover, with severe thunderstorms expected in Nabire and Jayawijaya.

Haze or smoke is predicted for several regions, including Bandung, Yogyakarta, Denpasar, Samarinda, and Ambon.

BMKG also issued a maritime warning for ocean waves between 2.5 and 4 meters in the western Indian Ocean off Bengkulu, western Lampung, and southern East Java.

Coastal communities in West Java, Central Java, West Nusa Tenggara, and Kalimantan were further advised to prepare for potential seasonal tidal flooding.
