Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) is assessing tsunami preparedness along the Banten coast, including Pandeglang and Serang districts and Cilegon city, using the standard indicators of the Tsunami Ready program.
Acting Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information and Communication Center Berton SP Panjaitan said Thursday that the agency’s Prevention Deputy Team has conducted assessments since September 6, coordinating with local governments, monitoring affected areas and providing preparedness assistance.
The assessment aims to ensure local governments and communities are prepared for potential impacts from Mount Anak Krakatau activity, including tsunami risks in vital areas and settlements previously affected by the 2018 Sunda Strait tsunami.
“Preparedness assessments were conducted in Tanjung Lesung, Sumberjaya Village, and Panimbangjaya Village in Pandeglang, as well as several coastal villages in Serang and Cilegon, to ensure that early warning facilities are functioning,” Berton said.
In Pandeglang District, BNPB found that tsunami warning sirens in Sumur and Panimbang sub-districts were operational, while evacuation routes were properly installed and disaster simulations were conducted regularly.
However, the Warning Receiver System (WRS) Gen in Tanjung Lesung was still undergoing repairs, according to the assessment.
In Serang District, inspections in Salira Village, Karang Suraga, and Anyar Village found that disaster risk reduction forums and coastal volunteers were operating effectively, supported by functioning warning sirens and evacuation maps leading to safe areas.
In Cilegon, an assessment in Kubangsari Urban Village confirmed the availability of early warning standard operating procedures, active village facilitators disseminating information, and a tsunami siren functioning reliably at the village office.
Berton said BNPB appreciated the active cooperation of local governments and community volunteers in maintaining disaster monitoring infrastructure to help protect coastal communities.
