Jakarta (ANTARA) – The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) is developing artificial graphite from coal waste for battery raw materials in an effort to support the electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem in Indonesia.
“In the upstream sector of advanced materials, BRIN is developing a 5V-generation lithium-ion battery and producing artificial graphite from coal waste,” BRIN Head Arif Satria said on Sunday.
He explained that the artificial graphite being developed has a structural conformity rate of 96.8 percent.
Furthermore, his office has also developed various electric vehicle prototypes, including the MEVI DELL-E (both I-Seater and O-Seater versions) and the E-TRIGO, a three-wheeled electric vehicle specifically designed for commercial use and accessible to people with disabilities.
“BRIN is also finalizing a hybrid conversion system (combining a gasoline engine, electric motor, and controller) with the potential to save fuel by up to 20-40 percent, as well as electric motorcycle conversions that utilize existing motorcycle frames at a much more affordable cost,” Satria outlined.
Previously, President Prabowo Subianto announced the provision of incentives for one million electric motorcycles produced domestically by Indonesian companies, as part of accelerating the electrification of public mobility.
He mentioned that the policy is part of the government’s efforts to reduce fuel imports and accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles.
The incentives for electric motorcycle production serve three main objectives, making the vehicles more affordable for the public, reducing reliance on imported fuel, and strengthening the domestic electric motorcycle industry, including its battery, component, software, and after-sales service supply chains.
The president noted that Indonesia already possesses almost all the key elements required for an electric vehicle battery supply chain.
“We will provide substantial incentives to companies capable of producing one million electric motorcycles domestically,” he said during his state address on the 2027 State Budget Draft and its Financial Note on Friday (August 14).
