Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia’s National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) and the Indonesian Air Force (TNI AU) prepared to reactivate artificial rain consoles to support weather modification operations in tackling forest and land fires in Indonesia.

The step began with an equipment condition check by the Air Force’s Maintenance Depot 10 (Depohar 10) team at the B.J. Habibie Science and Technology Area in Serpong, South Tangerang, on Tuesday (Oct 20).

“This check is an important stage to know the condition of the artificial rain consoles before repairs are made,” BRIN’s Manager of National Vital Objects and Occupational Safety and Health (K3) Agus Basuki said in a statement here on Wednesday.

Basuki explained the aim is to ensure that equipment later used in weather modification operations is truly in proper condition and could support operations optimally.

The availability of well-functioning weather modification equipment is one factor supporting operational readiness, he added, especially when a response to forest and land fire threats is needed.

He also noted the results of the check by the Depohar 10 team would be the first step in preparing repairs of the artificial rain consoles.

The equipment is planned to be taken to Bandung, West Java, for repairs to restore its condition and operational function.

Once the repair phase is done and the consoles are declared fit for use, the equipment is expected to be used again to support weather modification operations.

“After all repair and feasibility checks are completed, we hope the consoles can support weather modification operations, especially for forest and land fire response,” Basuki said.

Reusing the artificial rain consoles also shows the importance of maintaining and optimizing existing technology infrastructure so it can continue to provide benefits.

“Through the synergy of BRIN and the Indonesian Air Force, we hope the available weather modification equipment can be optimized again so it can support disaster response efforts in various parts of Indonesia,” Basuki said.
