Cilacap authorities respond to floods, landslide after heavy rain

Cilacap, Central Java (ANTARA) – Authorities in Cilacap District, Central Java, are mounting emergency response measures after overnight moderate-to-heavy rainfall triggered floods and landslides in several villages across multiple sub-districts.

Head of the Cilacap Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) Taryo said on Saturday that several areas remained inundated as of 8 a.m. local time.

“In the sub-districts of Maos and Kroya, floodwaters have begun inundating yards, farmlands, and roads and have entered several houses,” he said.

He added yards and farmlands in Mrenek Village, Maos Sub-district, had been submerged under 10 to 20 centimeters of floodwater.

Meanwhile, several neighborhoods in Karangreja Village were inundated by floodwaters reaching depths of up to 50 centimeters.

“Affected residents have yet to evacuate, but the Karangreja village administration has begun setting up a public kitchen at the village hall in anticipation of further developments,” Taryo explained.

Floodwaters measuring around 20 centimeters deep have also inundated Mujur Lor and Sikampuh villages in Kroya Sub-district, affecting a mosque, several shops, and homes.

Taryo further noted the Cilacap BPBD had requested heavy equipment to clear water hyacinth blockages in a tributary of the Silunjar River to prevent the water from overflowing and worsening the flooding.

He also reported flooding in Cilibang Village, Jeruklegi Sub-district, where floodwaters submerged a field and spilled onto a main road. However, the road remains accessible to both cars and motorcycles.

In addition to flooding, Jeruklegi experienced a landslide in Mandala Village, prompting emergency response efforts by the BPBD and local authorities.

“The Mandala village administration is seeking heavy equipment to speed up the clearance of landslide debris,” Taryo said.

He emphasized the agency would continue to help handling the situation by monitoring affected areas and coordinating with relevant stakeholders.
