Deputy Defense Minister stresses faster post-disaster recovery

Medan, North Sumatra (ANTARA) – Deputy Defense Minister Gen. Richard Tampubolon has emphasized the need to accelerate post-disaster recovery so affected areas can return to normal as quickly as possible through targeted, measured, and sustainable efforts.

“Accelerating post-disaster recovery is a shared priority to restore normal conditions,” Tampubolon said during a working visit to North Tapanuli District, North Sumatra, on Sunday.

He said strong coordination was essential, as several areas could remain vulnerable to further disasters that might hamper recovery efforts, including the reconstruction of bridges and other public facilities.

Tampubolon stressed that post-disaster infrastructure development must take into account technical requirements, geographical conditions, and the level of disaster vulnerability at each location.

“Development must take regional conditions and disaster vulnerability into account. If projects are carried out in protected forest areas or areas subject to special provisions, implementation must comply with applicable procedures and regulations,” he said.

He called on the disaster response task force to strengthen coordination among ministries, government agencies, and regional administrations to ensure that all stages of emergency response, rehabilitation, and reconstruction proceed effectively.

“All stages, from planning to implementation, must comply with applicable provisions so central and regional government programs can be on target and accountable,” he stated.

Besides infrastructure, the deputy minister also stressed the importance of speeding up the completion of relocating people living in disaster-prone areas through thorough studies and assessments to ensure new housing locations are truly safe.

According to him, relocation should not stop at providing housing but must also guarantee people’s continued livelihoods, including access to farmland, plantations, rice fields, and other sources of income.

“Public safety must be the priority in every post-disaster handling policy. Therefore, the government must work together to prepare safe locations while ensuring people can continue their lives and economic activities,” he added.
